What is a barricade jacket and how does it fit? +

A barricade jacket is a printed sleeve that drops over the top rail of a steel crowd barrier and covers the front face, usually secured underneath with ties or hook-and-loop straps so it cannot lift in the wind. A Barricade Cover works the same way but wraps further round the frame for a fuller finish. Both go on in seconds without tools, which matters when a steward is dressing a hundred metres of barrier line before doors open. They come off just as quickly for storage or reuse at the next event.

Will the covers fit the barriers my venue supplies? +

Not automatically — crowd barriers vary between hire companies, and the difference between a mesh-infill barrier and a flat-bar one changes how a cover sits. Ask your barrier supplier or venue for the exact length and height of the panels in metres before you order, and confirm whether the feet fold flat or sit proud, since protruding feet affect how low the cover can hang. Ordering a cover slightly generous is safer than ordering one that will not reach the bottom rail.

Why is mesh fabric used for outdoor barrier graphics? +

Because a solid panel on a barrier line acts like a sail. Wind pushes against the fabric and can drag a lightly weighted barrier out of position or topple it, which is a genuine safety issue at an outdoor site. A mesh fabric lets air pass through while still carrying a legible print, which keeps the load on the barrier down. If you are working outdoors, ask about mesh and make sure the barriers themselves are correctly weighted or braced.

How do I design barrier artwork that reads from a distance? +

Work on the assumption that people see your barrier for a couple of seconds while walking past at an angle. One logo, one short line, one strong colour — anything more is lost. Keep the important content in the upper two-thirds of the panel, because the lower third is hidden by whoever is standing in front of it. Repeat the design across the run rather than spreading one long message over several panels, since a barrier line is often rearranged on site and your sentence will end up out of order.

How many printed covers do I need for a queue line? +

Count the barrier panels rather than measuring the total run, since each cover fits one panel. Then decide how many actually face the public: on a straight queue only the outward face is seen, but at a corner or a crossing point both sides are visible and you may want to dress both. It is common to print a portion of the run and leave the rest bare where nobody stands. Order a couple of spares — covers get dirty and torn at outdoor events.

Do barrier covers work indoors at exhibitions? +

They do, and they are underused indoors. At a hall like ExCeL London, barriers appear around registration, at feature areas and outside busy stands, and an unbranded steel barrier is wasted space at exactly the point where people are standing still with nothing to look at. Indoors you can use a solid fabric rather than mesh, since wind is not a factor, which gives you a denser, richer colour. Check with the organiser before dressing any barrier you do not own.

How do I stop covers slipping or going missing during an event? +

Fasten every tie, not just the top ones — a cover held only at the rail will ride up and twist as people lean on it.
