Key Takeaways
Can you really design your own exhibition stand?
What do you need before you start?
Gather these first:
- Your stand size and type, such as 3m x 3m shell scheme, corner, or space-only
- The exhibitor manual, covering height limits, fire rules and deadlines
- The floor plan, showing where aisles and neighbouring stands are
- Your goal: leads, launches, meetings or brand awareness
- Your budget, including graphics, hardware, lighting and power
- Brand assets: logo files, colour references, fonts and images
The 4-step process: design your stand like a designer
The simplest way to structure your design is the Design Council’s Double Diamond, which has four phases: Discover, Define, Develop and Deliver.
“Helps people understand, rather than simply assume, what the problem is”
Here’s how it works for an exhibition stand.
Step 1: Discover who are you designing for?
- Who’s visiting? Trade shows made up 42% of UK exhibitions in 2025, and consumer shows just under a third; each needs a different tone.
- What do those visitors need to know in three seconds?
- What are competitors doing? Look at photos from last year’s show.
- What do the venue rules allow?
- Step 2: Define what’s your one message?
Write a one-line brief:
“At [show], we want [audience] to [action] because [reason].”
Then pick:
- One headline of around five words
- One hero image or product
- One call to action, such as book a demo, scan to get a quote or collect a sample
Step 3: Develop plan the layout and choose your displays
Sketch your stand plan. On a 3m x 3m stand:
|
Area |
What goes there |
|
Back wall |
Headline, logo and hero image |
|
Left side |
A counter with lead capture |
|
Right side |
A banner, plinth or demo area |
|
Front |
Left open, with 1–1.5m clear |
Design for everyone. One in four people in the UK are disabled, so allow for step-free access, a lower counter section, turning space and readable text.
Choose displays that fit your space and your team:
- A modular kit gives you a complete, coordinated stand.
- A fabric back wall is light, seamless, and easy to build.
- An SEG lightbox gives you a glowing focal point.
- A counter gives you storage and somewhere to greet visitors.
Pick lightweight, tool-free components. Your team will carry and build them, and manual handling causes 17% of workplace injuries in Great Britain.
Step 4: Deliver - Create artwork, check it, and order
- Download the supplier’s templates for each display.
- Design at full size, at 100–150 DPI for large fabric walls.
- Include bleed and keep text inside safe zones.
- Keep headlines high on the back wall, because anything low is hidden by visitors.
- Export print-ready PDFs with fonts outlined.
- Request a mockup and check it at viewing distance.
- Order early. Allow 7–14 days for production and 2–5 working days for delivery by DPD, Royal Mail or DX.
Exhibition stand ideas to borrow
- A bold single-colour back wall with one large headline
- A backlit logo for instant recognition from the aisle
- An open front with the counter to one side
- A press wall section for branded photos
- A QR code printed into the graphics, linking to a quote form
- Spotlights on one hero product (LEDs use 80% less electricity than halogen)
Here’s what exhibitors usually get wrong
- Designing on screen, not at scale. Text that looks big on a laptop is tiny from 5m away.
- Too many messages. Five claims compete, so none of them land.
- Ignoring templates. Wrong sizes and missing bleed lead to cropped logos and reprints.
- Putting key information low. People standing on the stand block it.
- Blocking the entrance with a table across the front.
- Forgetting the rules: height limits, fire certificates for fabrics (often to BS 5867-2) and power orders.
- Skipping the mockup. It’s the easy way to catch mistakes.
How much does it cost to design your own stand?
Designing it yourself saves agency fees. You pay for the hardware and print.
